Intriguing Insights # 12 E - If you want something. Go get it. Period.

Intrinsic - Optimistic - Action
5.CULTIVATOR

Now here is someone who is all about improving himself - he constantly seeks out new avenues to learn more and do new things and in effect cultivate himself.

This is probably one of the most inspiring of all eight identities. They are always optimistic about the future. They are hungry for action. And at the end of the day they are looking for deep intrinsic satisfaction. Surely in the process they touch many lives - but that is not their primary motivation.

My first example is the movie The Pursuit of Happyness and the character of Chris Gardner depicted therein. Will Smith stars in this moving tale inspired by the true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman struggling to build a future for himself and his 5-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Smith). When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With optimism and a desire to live up to his self worth, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.

My second example comes from the very recent Netflix docuseries My Unorthodox Life. Without making this a debate on religion or on the quality of the show, I would only like to draw your attention to the character of Julia Haart - the CEO of the global modeling agency Elite World Group. The web series documents Haart's decision to leave the tight-knit orthodox community and pursue her passions for fashion and design. Once again with optimism, action orientation and a desire to satisfy ones inner calling.

The last example of the Cultivator comes from our very own Indian Olympic contingent. While there are a number of stories that bring out this identity type. Let me just shed light on one.

Ten years ago, Pravin Jadhav, 24, didn’t even know what archery was. Today, he is a Tokyo Olympics medal hope as he teams up with Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai in India’s men’s recurve side as well as in an individual capacity. Jadhav’s journey as the son of daily wage workers, Sangita and Ramesh from Sarade village in Satara district to representing the country is remarkable and one filled with optimism, self belief and action. Watch the clip below as Pravin Jadhav tells our Prime Minister his story.
