Intriguing Insights #12 D - You're in my spot

Extrinsic - Pessimistic - Status Quo
4. CAUTIONER

Next we have a guy who is also not so positive about the future and driven by how he is perceived - he takes on the role of a warner - no action just a precautionary announcement.

Now this is a guy who is essentially a slacktivist - he wants to appear like he is doing something, but is not intending to do anything. He has a pessimistic world view and often just joins rants against a particular incident or situation.

The first character that comes to my mind when I think of the Cautioner - it is Home Simpson... We all know he is lazy and hence inherently prefers to stay in a state of status quo. But he is worries about how other perceive him - both his family and his community. Coming to the pessimism aspect - well take a look at the quote below - I think that makes it perfectly clear that Homer is indeed a classic case of the Cautioner.

Let's move on to a couple of other examples. Let me take forward some of the Star Wars examples. Who comes to mind to you?  To me it has to be C3PO.

Being as anxious as he is both the pessimism and the desire to maintain status quo come naturally to him. He is built to please and hence is always looking for external validation. I think the quote below gives us a very clear glimpse of the Cautioner in C3PO.

The third character I am going add under this identity is Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory fame. Now as far as Sheldon is concerned his desired for status quo comes from his OCD to have things in exactly the same way as he is comfortable with... His pessimism comes from his superior intelligence which always makes him more likely to predict a logical end to any situation even if it is not the desired end. That finally brings us to the extrinsic vs intrinsic motivation. Now on the looks of it one might say Sheldon in an intrinsically motivated person and hence does things the way he wants without bothering about others. But throw in a bit of competition and the question of his being a superior human being and one can see just how extrinsically motivated he is.
