Bias Binge #1 - Doing something is better than nothing
The Action Bias is when we prefer to take some action even when not taking any may actually prove more benefitial.
Now culturally we are a very hardworking race and have, since childhood, been told to always be on our toes... Not be lazy... Keep doing something. We are looked down upon if we take too many breaks, just let things be or decide to slow down.
Add to this brands have been telling us to 'Just Do It', 'Keep Walking' and the like. Absolutely love both those taglines by the way. But so do a whole lot of others which further fuels our bias that action is better than inaction.
Let me draw your attention to a recent campaign and a longer running tagline that actually tells you to 'Do Nothing'. What better way for the brand to share this message with Gen Zs and Millenials than to use Valentine's Day. A day even Gen Xers and I daresay some baby boomers would have been at the sorry end of an action bias...
The brand in question is 5-Star and this series of videos certainly brought out a chuckle in me. Beyond doubt, these bring alive how the action bias works and how sometimes inaction is for the better.
