Intriguing Insights #001 Just when she thought her life was over... she began to fly...

Lockdown - the origin of the word in 1975 - used for prisoners to keep them in their cells.

While that may be a sentiment many may seem to relate to, there's more to that than meets the eye.

Memes have equated the condition of mankind to a bird in a cage. But what the consumer is seeing himself as seems to be telling quite the different story.

Pulse reports by McKinsey and Company have shown a significant increase in remote learning, wellness and meditation and online personal training during the lockdown period.

Consumers therefore seem to be consuming their current state not as being in a cage but as being in a cocoon...

A cocoon is defined as a protective covering to shelter oneself while one grows.

A cocoon is what confines and isolates a caterpillar right before it turns into a butterfly...

And what are the butterflies one may expect to see once we start moving out.... Here are just some of the examples I have come by, I'm sure there will many more to add to this...
  1. A fitter, leaner more health conscious consumer - we've been reading about this for a while now... but a lot more people are putting money where their mouth is today... also this age group is growing a lot wider than one saw pre lockdown.
  2. A more knowledgeable work force with MOOCs on related and relevant subjects being a good way to increase productivity during slack.
  3. More enriched minds with hobbies such as music, dance, writing and many more making their way back into the otherwise time starved working class.
  4. New vocations for those who really can't seem to dodge those Monday morning blues.
  5. And finally more entrepreneurs who have had the time to rustle up new ideas while be cocooned at home.
Sure, people are down, they are stressed but that may be driven by lack of surety in the near future and not as much because of being caged in...

Consumers are finding ways to metamorphose into butterflies, marketers need to be careful not expect caterpillars on the otherside.
